Promoting Healthy Eating

The media is constantly reminding us that childhood obesity has more than doubled in the past 30 years (CDC). However, change may finally be on the horizon. According to Tom Philpott’s article Is the Junk-Food Era Drawing to a Close? large processed food companies such as ConAgra, which owns Hunts, Reddi Whip, Ro-Tell, Swiss Miss, Orville Redenbacher, and Chef Boyardee, has “recently slashed its 2015 profit projections and sacked its CEO.”

Though healthier options are on the rise, and this may excite a lot of parents, it may still be a challenge to get your kids excited about being served kale chips instead of Lays. HelpGuide.org suggests the following ways to promote healthy childhood eating, along with tons of other great information about nutrition for children and teens:

  • Have regular family meals
  • Cook more meals at home
  • Get kids involved in the food preparing process
  • Make a variety of healthy snacks available
  • Limit portion sizes
